As long as the outrageously vast gulf continues to exist between those people in Jakarta who are buying Gucci loafers and TAG Heuer watches and those in the rest of the country who can barely afford to eat, let alone educate their children, then Indonesia will continue to be seen as a backward country; known for its instability and as a provider of desperate maids and cheap labour, no matter how many luxury apartments and shopping malls are built…
