Another reason why I don’t live in Malaysia: The politicians, men and women get so sanctimonious and moralistic about others, down to their dressing. They can’t leave well alone what is rightfully a personal matter.
Check out Rocky’s posting about how a Wanita Umno wants the Prime Minister to chide a minister’s wife for sexy attire:
“We, as women, feel very embarrassed. We teach our children to dress decently, to wear the scarf, but the action of one minister’s wife puts us to shame.” – Rahimah Idris, Wanita Umno leader, who said the sexy Datin was not even decently dressed at her former husband’s burial recently.
Reminds me of a time when a couple of my women Malaysian friends in Jakarta would intentionally irritate the then ambassador’s wife by intentionally wearing above-knee length skirts and sleeveless blouses to the Malaysian functions. Its not like they were wearing miniskirts or see through blouses but that did n ot stop the Ambassador’s wife from looking dour.
On my part I refused to comply with the “Malaysian Batik” dress code on the grounds that Unspun would never partake in any acts of batik chauvinism. Have you seen how ugly modern Malaysian batik is? The silky ones with abstract waves? Yeech! Totally ersatz like so much of the politics and culture there.
