Here’s something heard about Globe Asia, which bills itself as Indonesia’s only English language business magazine, at the JFCC EGM last night: there is no list of the 400 richest Indonesians.
What list? Well it’s in the magazine’s advertisement in the Jakarta Post. The advertisement comprises a photo of the magaxine cover for its “soft launch” edition. One of the items promised in the soft launch cover is a list of Indonesia’s 400 richest.
A journalist familiar with the ninside workings of the magazine said last night that there is actually no such list. Is this tantamont to misleading advertisement if true?
I’ve likewise heard confirmation that the “400 Richest Indonesians” list promised in the Globe Asia ad is pure fiction. I was cautious about Unspun’s rather uncharitable earlier remarks about Globe Asia, but this fake list stunt really reeks of cycnicism of the lowest order. It also suggests that they have contempt for the readership that that they are purportedly trying to attract by thinking that they’d be stupid to notice that the promised list was not forthcoming, or would swallow the lie – and really, that’s what it amounts to, a bare-faced lie – and buy it anyway. I hope that potential readers prove them wrong.
