First of all, Ong is not Indonesian blogger as Jennifer think. Hope she corrects it.

Secondly, Ong should have realised that the scientific evidence of no pollution has kept WAHLI's mouth shut.

Thirdly, this case is quite complicated. On one side, NGOs are quite supported by the government, which is uncommon, probably because De Minahasa has a bargaining power in case of separation from the Republic. On the other side, Newmont is supported by the educated locals, who understand the value of their lands historically and culturally.

The reality is this: Walhi aren't intersted in a dialogue, they're just interested in attacking.

The reality is that when you engage a Walhi activist - up close and personal - in a scientific discussion, their arguments collapse.

Citizen: So you say corruption and law enforcement * including police * area all problems in Indonesia

Walhi: Yes.

Citizen: And you say that Newmont has polluted Buyat Bay, despite evidence from Australia's CSIRO, Japan's Minamata Institute and the W.H.O., all the basis of evidence from a tiny police lab without any experts or even scientists trained in mercury or arsenic detection.

Walhi: um, er, we have to go with the evidence, um, er, don't be an arrogant foreigner !

Citizen: Why have you ignored proven, undoubted cases of pollution, such as mercury trading in Kalimantan, river pollution in urban areas, or even just * air pollution in Jakarta * !!

Walhi: Um, her, we have to go with the evidence...Don't be an arrogant foreigner...!

That's the general quality of debate. At the end of the day it's a pretty simple equation. Walhi's funding = attacking prominent Western multinationals = attacking Western mining companies.

The invitation for Walhi to frame a discussion of their design to facilitate a healthy discussion is excellent. The NGO can start by telling everyone what the body stands for, the current projects and aspirations and then invite questions from the readers.
