How scary it must be for the blogophobic officials and politicians in this part of the world if bloggers all got together more that they already do.This from an interview by Susan Loone, one of Malaysia’s top bloggers, of Nila Tanzil Indonesia’s blogger who was the target of Malaysian Tourism Minister Tengku Adnan’s comments about lying bloggers.
Also see Jeff Ooi (Thanks Jeff, for saying Nila works in “one of the foremost agencies in Indonesia”. Maverick, where Unspun also puts in some hours a day, is not an agency but a PR consultancy, but moi is being pedantic and should be grateful for the kind words nonetheless).
| Do you think it will be good if bloggers united can be introduced in indonesia as well?
Yes. I think so. The numbers of bloggers in Indonesia have been increasing and blog becomes more popular here. If more Indonesian bloggers become members of Bloggers United, I think it would help Bloggers United to spread its mission. The more people from different countries be part of Bloggers United, the merrier You can see from my case study, Indonesian and Malaysian bloggers are hand-in-hand in giving supports. That’s a good sign. We can be one big happy family together with bloggers from other countries and encourage freedom of expressions in the world as well as urge everyone to be a responsible and credible blogger, so that people can treat blog as a new alternative medium to seek information with high credibility. |

Bloggers United should not be Malaysian-bloggers-only body. I am sure Indonesian blogers can join as well like you already part if itby displaying the BU logo. But the logo is undoubtedly implying that BU is Malaysian-only bloggers union. The truth is, its not.
That is a great idea. It will help us improve blogging scene in Indonesia. More and more of my friends are starting there blogs and I think it is helping make a difference to improve Indonesia,a nd make it a better place.
I will definitely help to have bloggers from various countries. Ensuring credibility, however, gets more challenging with exponentially-increasing number of members.
The authorities fear nothing more than bloggers getting together as a united group. What started as a move to teach the bloggers a lesson in Malaysia appear tom have triggered of a wave of strong feelings leading to this. Even if the NST wins the court case against Rocky and Jeff, the spirit of the bloggers will grow from strength to strength. The moral victory belongs to the bloggers. Once the wave begins, there is no stopping it. It will carry on with a momentum of its own. The actions by the Malaysian authorities to effect control and a clampdown may backfire yet.
hey unspun, we’re really glad to have nila and others too like mat salo from kalimantan – what i really think is that Indonesian bloggers can use the logo and insert their flag if they want to – am sure kickdefella won’t mind – will have a word with him. you see, i am also encouraging the latin americans to do the same. great isnt it!!!
Susan: Understand the feeling of solidarity but am two minds about bloggers being too consolidated into groups.
On one hand it is good to have even informal structures like Bloggers United where bloggers get together to make common cause against a specific action or incident.
On the other hand I worry whether it will lead to a tendency for bloggers to adopt the “bloggers are to be defended, right or wrong” attitude.
I think the blogosphere as it is, with its imperfections and free spirit as well as links and feed readers, is enough for bloggers to form swarms over issues when it is important enough.
Something about the wisdom of crowds being most effective when there is minimal interference such as peer pressure. But the jury is still out for me on this one.
Unspun:
Without meaning offence to the bloggers forming groups and alliances, I am impressed by your stand. Join only after you are convinced and be committed once you are in.
I was just wondering if all the bloggers were swept up by the growing tide. It’s good to be part of it if you know the issues they stand for reflect yours too.
I believe Politics 101 Malaysia has taken a similar stand.
unspun, i agree with, so am keeping the loose network of bloggers united alive, for those who dont want a formal union. why not? as i said in the gathering, we should be inclusive rather than exclusive :=)
