Humor and wit are probably the best weapons to deal with zealots – religious, racial and sexual.
In Indonesia the liberals are splitting their sides over the Tweets by @FPIYeah, which makes the thuggish Islamic Defenders Front look like Keystone Cops in their attempts to intimidate anyone deemed less holy than them.
Now if only Malaysian Tweeps can follow suit with Twitter accounts like @1MalaysiaYeah, @RELAYeah, @IbrahimAliYeah…
@FPIYeah Tweet Their Feelings for Islamic Defenders Front |
@FPIYeah, or Front Perusak Islam (Islamic Destroyers Front), has taken on the somewhat less popular Islamic Defenders Front on Twitter. |
Jakarta. It is said that imitation is the sincerest flattery but it appears that that is not the case with the Islamic Destroyers Front. |
The individual or group, known in Indonesian as Front Perusak Islam (FPI), is a tongue-in-cheek poke at Indonesia’s hard-line Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), who continue to make headlines for their self-appointed role as upholders of the Islamic values of an allegedly secular nation. |
Writing on Twitter, @FPIYeah wrote that “our action to arrest” the former editor of the Indonesian edition of Playboy magazine, Erwin Arnada, was “cool.” |
FPIYeah has already attracted more than 20,000 followers on the social networking Web site, counting among its fans celebrities such as comedian Tika Panggabean. |

FPI is not as “big” as the the media always reported.
It became so popular because the media, who always love sensations, kept reporting every move they made.

If we have @1MalaysiaYeah in Malaysia, we will find the authorities predictably intolerant to satire about their noisy but feeble efforts at community integration. I can foresee calls by the some from the ruling party to revoke the citizenship of the so-called perpetrators (say, this itself makes excellent material for @1MalaysiaYeah, doesn’t it? :)), invoking the notorious ISA, etc.
