The Irony of Being Mahathir

The Jakarta Post carried this article under the headline “The dramatic irony of Mahathir and the media” on May 31.
What goes around, comes around.

If former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was anyone else but himself, he would be contemplating this saying and savoring its irony this very moment. But Mahathir is Mahathir and incapable of irony. Because of this he will, like the old Greek tragedies, be destined to debase himself further.

What is ironic is how Mahathir, who lobotomized the Malaysian press during his 23 years in power from 1981 till 2003 is now going around whining about the lack of press freedom in Malaysia.

How this came about began some months ago when the government led by his handpicked successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi began to dismantle what many in Malaysia considered to be Mahathir’s mistakes and grandiose plans.

The quarrel began to surface Badawi government got rid of the CEO of Malaysia’s national car company, Proton. Following this Mahathir has since found other reasons to criticize the government: its decision to sell off a Proton subsidiary to foreigners for a token sum of money, its decision to sell sand to Singapore; its decision to let the island state use the airspace of a southern Malaysian state; and its decision to shelf a half-bridge project to Singapore.

Never one to be considered a wall flower, Mahathir lashed out by the government but the mainstream Malaysia Press is not giving him any play. Conditioned by 23 years of Mahathirism to be subservient to the powers-that-be and to muzzle dissent they did what they were trained to do to perfection.

Incensed by this alienating experience, Mahathir became shriller as each day went by and he was ignored by the mainstream media. He has become so desperate recently that he agreed to be interviewed by a news outlated he used to hate: independent Malaysian news portal Malaysiakini.com.

Malaysiakini.com is a website that was a thorn in Mahathir’s side when he was in power. In Mahathir’s day Malaysiakini.com was frowned upon and not so subtle pressures exerted to get it to tone down. But, bless them, Malaysiakin.com refused to back down and stuck to its believe in the freedom of the press to report and be critical of government.

Malaysiakini began posting its three part story of the Mahathir interview on Tuesday. In the first part of the interview Mahathir remained true to his aggressive style, only now that he is out of power he has lost the menace and sounds like a grumpy old man forced to attend the birthday of a relative he dislikes. Here’s an extract of his interview:

Mahathir: I never liked Malaysiakini.com. It was very critical of me before.

Malaysiakini: We’re just doing our job. We’ve also been very critical of the present government as well …

Mahathir: Yes. You are critical of everybody. Wait until you become the government. Then others will have a chance to take potshots at you. Let’s go on.

What is fascinating from this interview, and Mahathir’s words and deeds of late, is that it provides us with a disturbing insight into the mind of someone incapable of perceiving irony.

Irony is a literary technique, originally used in Greek tragedy, by which the full significance of a character’s words or actions are clear to the audience or reader although unknown to the character.

It is clear from his actions and words that he just does not believe that he destroyed whatever press freedom there was in Malaysia during his tenure. Anyone else familiar with Malaysian Press history will tell you that that is simply not true and that Operasi Lallang in 1987, when he closed down several newspapers and locked up many dissenters, was one of the most decisive move to emasculate the Press.

After that operation all mainstream media towed the line, anyone that was perceived as critical or did not tow the line was either forced out or they willingly left as that was the day press freedom in Malaysia took a mortal blow. I know because I was one of those journalists who voted with my feet after my paper’s license was revoked.

We and other have moved on since then to other lives and even the most critical of us would not hesitate to give Mahathir his due for bringing the country forward economically.

In this aspect he has done a great job for the country. He should now gracefully take to the quiet life, plant some orchids and go write his memoirs or visit old friends like Suharto. Persisting in taking on the government in a high profile manner, without a keen appreciation of irony, is only going through the motions of a tragicomedy in the making.

[…] Back in May Unspun blogged about the Irony of being Mahathir with the thrust of the argument that because Mahathir is incapable of  appreciating irony, he is destined to  play out a tragedy in which everyone else but him realizes his shortcomings. As such, his downfall is imminent to all but himself. […]

  4. My, my, What colorful language we have here from Ms Nightingale. Talking about Tun Mahathir being incapable of irony, Ms Nightingale is certainly capable of it by default in her name! Hahaha…

On a more serious note, I believe Tun made a very serious mistake in his judgement of Abdullah Badawi when he chose the latter to succeed him. AAB (Abdullah) was thought to be the most unassuming of the three candidates and the truth as it is today lives to haunt Tun.

  6. Bayi: Thanks for the input. To my disappointment Ms Nightingale never come back to tell me and the readers of this blog about her childhood traumas…

Seriously though, I agree with you that the Tun can’t be written off. But I think the odds are against him because the politics of Malaysia is the politics of patronage.

Those that control the means of patronage are those in power. The whole UMNO machinery is oiled by patronage and the largese it provides. It is a system that mahathir in herited, used when he was in power, and what ABB et al is using now.

Still, politics is the art of the possible and I’ll grant you the possibility, but not the probability, of the return of the Tun.

  7. As a malaysian who grown up in mahathir era, i believe that he is so stupid and not entitle at all for the premier post. What he had done for the past 40 years is only creating a dumb society hiding behind the twin tower. Yes he probably very nationalistic but he is not realistic. Therefore, i frankly speaking to call him idiot.

  9. huh, whats da fuss all about? Tun coming back to power? a 110% NO for me, enough is enough. u see first time in national history, the Kelantan MB is sitting next to the PM in ECER launching here in KB, Kelantan. Plus he Paklah even hold Nik Aziz’s hand to/from the podium for his speech. and here i would like to CONGRATULATE Nik Aziz for that powerful speech which im sure Pak Lah’s ears were burning red when hearing his speech…

“I had the opportunity to peruse the list of mega projects contained in the master plan that is said to involve an expenditure totalling RM112 billion. Among other things, it will include a University that has been launched several times, the East Coast Expressway, a jetty in Tok Bali and the effort to upgrade Sultan Ismail Petra Airport to a South East Asian hub, as well as a strong desire to produce a Bumiputera Commerce and Industry community. Alhamdulillah, all these proposals have long been identified and are part of Kelantan’s long-term stratefic development plan which we have documented and signed since2 May 2000, which is about 7 years ago. Nik Aziz said the ECER should be realistic and not hypocritical. With regards to the allocation of RM112 billion for ECER, a further RM177 billion for the Northern Corridor and RM47.6 billion more for the Iskandar Regional Development, the rakyat have become somewhat curious with the sum.
They become even more amazed as the money that would be spend could cover the Ninth Malaysia Plan and the 10th Malaysia Plan and might even cover the 11th Malaysia Plan. Nonetheless, if the money is there it is not a problem, and we should be grateful to the Almighty. Alhamdullah, (and) well done! I have read somewhere that an effective plan is one that is not doubted by the very people the plan is intended for.” full here… http://www.harakahdaily.net/bm/index.php/arkib-siku/ucapan-nik-aziz-di-ecer-tazkirah-mursyidul-am-pas-kepada-presiden-umno.html

But if Tun wanna to criticize the present government harshly, i have to say im all with u Tun, im glad that u are still well and healthy. but um Tun, u should be harsher in ur critisim, not enough lah. Tun can continue working with the opposition forces coz Tun was aledy well branded by some UMNO ppl as pro-opposition. So why not?

Dont forget our YELLOW WALK ya and lastly i would like to quote this from rocky’s bru blog…”Calling all bloggers! When was the last time you had an afternoon stroll in the park? Come to the Dataran Merdeka this Saturday at 3 pm. Meet others who share the belief in fair and clean elections, and let’s have a walk to the Istana. Come in yellow and in peace. It should be a walk in the park except for those who don’t believe in fair and clean elections. more here http://rockybru.blogspot.com/2007/11/bloggers-for-peaceful-march.html

Tun is still powerful in many ways. That’s the fact. No matter how many people hating him, no doubt he still has his own followers. And never say him nyanyuk because nyanyuk is only use by Malays again those elder people who they hate…is there any nyanyuk Mat Salleh? (G.Bush once choked himself with a biscuit)

For me Tun is still relevant in many ways. He had controlled a government more than 2 decades, and he even managed to shut up America & Britain…so, Malaysian must appreciate him for that.

Press freedom? If there are no press freedom…why HARAKAH Daily could ever survive? N if PAS really play the freedom, why there is no an inch good stories about BN in Harakah….actually, PAS pun same je…DAP pun same…PKR lagilah, I still wonder what are actually their agenda…When the leaders holding the throne….all the freedom is define in their own language.

Tun…just speak up. At least we know…

    dpt info drpd http://www.raksasabn.blogspot.com

“Nik, bukan aku taknak jalankan hang punya strategi ni, tapi masa tak sesuai”. Muka YB Nik Nazmi berubah.

Orang tua tu kalau dah naik angin tak pakai akal dah…dulu habaq lain la ni habaq lain. Dulu dia suruh I paksa orang Bahagian terima sistem kuota, hari ini dia dok bantai Pak Lah benda sama.

“Hang jaga Khalid cukup. Kita masih memerlukan suara Mahathir.

Diatasnya bertulis:

    Presiden: Ku Li

    Timbalan: Najib

    Naib Presiden:
    1) Ali Melaka
    2) Ghani Johor
    3) Mukhriz

    Ketua Pemuda: Khir

    Naib Ketua Pemuda: Razali Muar

Rakyat dah tolak KJ. UMNO dah tolak KJ. Kenapa perlu ada Khir sebagai calon simpanan?

Diamana dia hendak letak muka dihadapan Dato’ Hisham?.

  14. Well,

Mahatir may have been a good leader as mention he also screw up.

Talking abt him shutting America and Britain is just plain shit.
What is Malaysia standing in the world? what has it achieve when it should have done much much better with all the natural resources.- duit masuk pocket saja or ? A good leader leaves behind not only good developing country but grooms good leaders to take over to continue to run the country. Not someone who chooses a leader and then condemns him that he is not a capable person. Then he mentions his deputy Najib shld take over and later on even says he is a coward who listens to ABB and is also not fit as well. What does this implies- chakap budak budak – Is Mahatir sane. Maybe he need to have his brain scan.

A good leader retires gracefully and maintain his respect instead bit by bit he is losing it as well as bringing his reputation and country down.

There is a lot more that can be said abt your country bu it is time it leaders look at the world around you and know it is tech era and not the keris era. I am glad the Indians spoke up and took the challenge followed by the chinese it is a equal world and the Malays must know this otherwise they will never learn and forever be left behind. Face up and earn your living and dont be dependant on others?

This should be a reminder for Malays to wake up. Some rakyat are super angry over the affirmative action propelled by Tun Dr Mahathir.

They got citizenship on the cheap out of the graciousness of the bumiputeras. They then conveniently forget and now dare to challenge the constitution.

The richest Malaysian is a non-malay. Does this prove something, dear Katherine Nightingale and like-minded bloggers?

You should read extensively before spouting onscenities. Such degrading behaviour! If your kind were to get to power, I think the bumis will join membership with the Australian Aborigines and the American Red Indians – endangered?
