SBY vs Amien Rais

Indonesia’s professional chatterers are again trying to convince the world how shallow they are. This time it is over their comments on how SBY should respond to the attacks from Amien Rais over allegations that he took money from the US for his political campaign.

Unspun thought the President did well by responding to Amien’s allegations by denouncing it, with appropriate indignation, as slander. Stratgic anger is something that the president should use more often to counter the perception that he’s indecisive and namby pamby. His emotion only enhanced his image and made him more human.

So what’s this nonsense these Indonesian experts quoted in newspapers, like this clip below from The Jakarta Post illustrates, on about?

One is very tempted to say that it’s the Javanese knee jerk action at play here. Don’t anger anyone, don’t show emotion, don’t do anything. It’s just so last century, or a few. No wonder most of them are still waiting for the Ratu Adil. Might as well wait for Godot.

Go SBY go!

SBY’s slam of Amien ‘unnecessary, overreaction
The Jakarta Post, JakartaPresident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s criticism of former presidential candidate Amien Rais over allegations he received illegal funds for his presidential campaign has backfired with analysts saying Yudhoyono overreacted in an unnecessary manner.

Yudhoyono accused Amien on Friday of slander for the latter’s statement insinuating Yudhoyono and his campaign team received donations from U.S. sources and accepted money embezzled by former fisheries minister Rokhmin Dahuri, now on trial for corruption, for his presidential campaign in 2004.
