Tempo becomes first Indonesian MSM to blog

tempo-interactive-blog.jpgTempo, the group behind Indonesia’s most influential public affairs magazine, today launched its blogsite Blog Tempo Interaktif, making it the first Indonesian mainstream media (MSM) to venture into the blogosphere.

In the posting to kick off the blog, the editor for Koran Tempo and Tempo Interaktif S. Malela Mahargasarie explained that Tempo was getting into blogs because they have changed the way people communicate and interact. Tempo, said Malela, wants to get into conversations with its readers because they have found, for instance, that the choices of the editors are not really what the readers expect or want to read about.

Tempo’s journalists, many of whom have been ardent bloggers, will also be contributing to the blog.

Congrats to Tempo. This is one paper that demonstrates that it realizes what’s going on out there and how blogging is going to change the way most of us – journalists, PR consultants, businesses and others – communicate in the future.

Unspun is sure that other mainstream media will follow suit. The Jakarta Post is apparently contemplating an interactive strategy but given how conservative the decision makers are there, they probably still think that the Spinning Jenny is a cutting-edge innovation.

  2. This will be an interesting development to watch. The economics of MSM are still more favorable in countries like Indonesia and China, which still have a huge digital divide.
There also seems to be a digital divide across the generations. Didn’t seem to occur to the anti-porn committee, for example, that alot of young Indonesians in the city get their smut from the internet.
How long before Bloggers can cover press conferences here ? Our friend blogger Yosef Ardi, for example, has quickly shot to the forefront. The Bapaks and Ibus who run this country might take longer to catch on. But the fact that Juwono Sudarsono and Wimar Witoelar are bloggers offers hope.

  3. Achmad: what I find fascinating is how blogging will change journalism in Tempo. Right until now it’s enjoyed an elevated status and sometimes gets a bit out of touch with readers and reality, not to mention the facts.

Bloggers will add a dimension of hyper scrutiny to Tempo and the editorial staff have to respond to this hyper scrutiny.

It’s a bod experiment and I hope it works as I think it’ll be good for journalism here.
