Hotel Kalla

Indonesia Matters reports that VP Yusuf Kalla has told businessmen of Chinese descent to regard Indonesia as a home, not a hotel.

It is precisely statements like this, uttered by pribumi or bumiputra leaders in Indonesia and Malaysia, that make them feel like leaving the country or at least headging some of their money overseas.

The truth of most businessmen of Chinese descent in Southeast Asia is that they have become loyal citizens of the countries in which they, and very often generations of their family, have been born and grew up in. many of them would never want to live in China, the home of their ancestors but a land which has become alient to them as they developed local preferences and tastes.

Many of these Chinese are also nationalistic and have done more for the country than many other people. They have built roads, schools, hospitals, temples, mosques and churches for the local communities when they did not have to.

Yet most of them at some level are considered second class citizens by the local nationalistic jingoists.

Indonesia’s Chinese businessmen, especially the conglomerate bosses, have had a particularly tough ride, especially since Reformasi. Overnight almost all of them have been tarred as “corruptors” and until today there is a witch hunt against them. There are persistent calls for justic, seizure of their assets etc etc.

Sure, many of them were anything but squeaky clean. If this is the case then they shoudl be brought before the law, be guaranteed a fair trail and the matter should end there. But this government is so namby pamby that many of them remain accused but their cases are languising in some bureaucratic drawer or the judiciary system.

Even if they wanted to face the music and start all over again, they cannot.

Is it a wonder then that these businessmen of Chinese descent choose to take their money and invest it elsewhere, like in China where they welcome investors whether they are the sons of the Yellow Emperor or not.

Maybe Kalla should think more like a hotel operator and think more about how to attract guests of Chinese descent to stay in his patch insteaqd of going to that oh-so-attractive hotel down the road which spares no expense at making them feel at home.

  3. racial discrimination against the chinese. yes, very limited in its nature and definitely getting a lot better.

indcoup, what is it that you’re trying to prove, Indonesians are racist and you guys are fearing a concentration camp? that this country will soon descend to the New World Order and you will be turned into shampoo? what?
you wrote yourself, of your very personal experience with someone sounding similar to your description – or i might get it wrong, i’m not sure.

Merryl Lynch/CapGemini published a report of 55,000 high net worth individuals, holding assets worth $260 billion in Singapore. A full third – worth $87 billion – are Indonesians with permanent citizenship there. They offered very little legal cooperation and very little assistance where corruption investigation in SG is concerned, Indonesia don’t even have extradition treaty with them. HK isn’t really that much better.

Is it a surprise that some people are getting frustrated?

I totally agree, JK’s comment is in poor taste and as a public official he could do without going over the sensitivities of the country, but you inarticulate lot have to stop doing your mutt dance everytime some idiots make stupid comments. You’re a bigot with a bad taste for a joke, sometimes i enjoy your silly humour, most times i find it in poor taste.
I don’t go around demonizing the entire kingdom just because a bad apple has a blog.

Some people are dumb and say dumb things. Call them dumb, full stop. I play golf with JK and he stole my friend’s underwear once. FOR REAL. Not all Indonesians i play golf with steal underwear. Only him. (more accurately, one of his guards, he came and apologized later). Now you will say all Indonesians are kleptomaniacs?

Either we can move on and talk of other more important things, or you’re just going around hunting your delusional Third Republic forever.

You know, if the test pack my gf keeps are as sensitive as you are, i would’ve died of high blood pressure. you need to smoke more of them stuff and chill out a lil.

  4. Treespotter: appreciate the arguments against silliness but I think its time we let bygones be bygones. Let’s start anew with future postings. What’s done is finished. Indulge me on this and let’s see if Indcoup can make good his end as well.
