Religious wallahs in Malaysia encouraging homosexuality?


 A letter in The Jakarta Post today suggests that the PAS guys in Malaysia may be inadvertently encouraging homosexuality with all the nonsense about men dancing with men and women dancing with women. Agree or disagree the letter writer, does seem to have cottoned on to something very logical.

 Heterophobia

While liberal-minded people may applaud initiatives to increase tolerance toward homosexuality, these should not come at the cost of intolerance for normal heterosexual behavior.

The Jakarta Post‘s ASEAN section on Dec. 18 reported that “the Islamist rulers of a northern Malaysian state have decided to permit dance clubs, as long as they keep men and women apart.” These “rulers” appear to be encouraging homosexual behavior while discouraging traditionally heterosexual socializing.

In a similar vein, we read about efforts in Aceh Province to severely punish the mingling of unmarried couples by public caning. Presumably, this is the same crowd which is vigorously supporting Aa Gymnastiar’s recreational approach to marriage.

Moderate Indonesians may wonder why traditional customs are being thrown overboard by the same people who have been railing against the spread of Western culture. Indonesian culture is worth saving.

    dey watch it mate. as a kelantanese i resent people accusing the islamic leaders of the islamic state of kelantan with its islamist policies of encouraging homosexuality. in fact the move is to encourage more people to go dance in sungai golok. now, if there were just not that many bombs going off every now and then in the southern thai city, it would be perfect.

    Somboon sounds like another homophobic. As far as I know, the percentage of males which are homosexual are similar to those which are left-handed, about 10%. It’s God’s design, so who are you are anybody else to criticize God?

    Sexual reproduction was nature/God’s solution to create the evolutionary setting upon which mankind could emerge from amoeba-fish-mammals-primates. Why are the fanatical Islamists so intent upon frustrating God’s design? They are blasphemously trying to usurp God’s own prerogative!

    Unspun, there’s a related story about the unintended consequences of restricting heterosexual mingling the May issue of the Atlantic Monthly .     And then there was this report about a month ago about the ineffectiveness of the scientifically unfounded Abstinence-Only Program in the US (“no sex is safe sex”). This was a Bush administration’s program that was championed by his administration and applauded by his religious conservative supporters as a program to reduce STDs.

    When will these people learn?
