What is this man talking about? Is it the same Indonesia that Unspun is living in? If it is, then Unspun must be so out of the loop to think that such ‘crush Malaysia’ sentiments were only a flash in the pan months and months ago. So why is this opinion piece timely?
‘Crush Malaysia’ trauma and the zero sum game
Imran Imtiaz Shah Jacob, Kuala Lumpur
Border-line issues continue to dominate Malaysia — Indonesia ties, as the calls to “crush Malaysia” echo from the days of Konfrontasi, or the dispute over the incorporation of Borneo into the then Federation of Malaya simmer in the background. On the ground in Malaysia, the general public is seemingly oblivious to the mounting tensions between the two nations.
The near combat incidence over Ambalat island or also referred to as the Ambalat offshore area in the Celebes (Sulawesi) Sea off the east coast of Borneo (Kalimantan to Indonesia) brought the two nations to the brink of war. Malaysians were alarmed when news of the collision between the Indonesian naval vessel KRI Tedung Naga and Malaysian patrol boat KD Rencong broke but it did not give rise to anti-Indonesia sentiments. |
