TAWAU: Chaos broke out at a mass wedding ceremony for 22 couples in this east coast town when two religious officials came to fisticuffs.
The brawl started when one attempted to stop the other from performing the wedding ceremony at Al-Kauthar mosque hall here, claiming the Tawau religious affairs unit had not given prior clearance.
It was learned that the fight was between an Imam from a mosque in Kota Kinabalu under the Sabah Islamic Affairs Council (MUIS) and an official from the Sabah Islamic Affairs Department (JHEANIS).
Witnesses said that the Imam had allegedly tried to strangle the JHEANIS official who had ordered him to stop the ceremony.
The wedding ceremony was called off with the wedding couples and their relatives leaving the hall, witnesses said.
Tawau police chief Asst Comm Jaafar Mohd. Yusuf confirmed that both the Imam and the JHEANIS official had lodged separate reports, adding that an investigation was in progress. |
