Bakrie blames media for exaggerating misery of flood victims

Question: when is a person defensive?

Answer: when everything that happens to them are caused by someone or something beyond their control

So it is with Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare Bakrie. Bakrie of Sidoarjo was last seem blaming Mother Nature for Lapindo (see Bakrie blames Mother Nature for Lapindo). Now Bakrie of the Slums — so called because he once ventured into the slums in the wake of President SBY’s inspection of flood affected areas (and thus acquiring a deep understanding of how poor flood victims feel) — is now blaming the media for creating the false impression that flood victims, especially those who’ve had their houses flooded out, are anything but happy.

Not understanding the mindset of flood victims, reader DR sms’d Unspun this morning in a huff. The Minister, he reported, had just old SCTV in an interview about the flood situation that:

“banjir ini di besar besarkan oleh media, seakan akan dunia akan kiamat…lihat saja banyak pengunsi yang masih tersenyum…”

The translation for this gem of a quote is:

“[the impact of] the flood has been exaggerated by the media, as if the world is coming to an end…just look, many of the flood refugees are still smiling.”

Unspun is aghast and speechless at such penetrating insight into the psyche of flood refugees. Shicks, if Unspun had his house flooded out, and had to camp out hungry and shivering in the wet and cold, Unspun‘d be smiling too. But since Unspun is not so fortunate the only thing Unspun can do is award this posting a shit-for-brains tag.

  1. I’d never want to be seen defending Bakrie… BUT the soundbite may not be telling the whole story of what he’s referring to. There have been lots of stories and reports (of which I’m sure Bakrie has seen) about thousands of people “pretending to be victims” so they can get the free handouts, thus literally taking food and meds away from other truly needy ones.

    I don’t necessarily fault them or judge them as they are likely quite poor and it makes economic sense — to them — it’s just a shame that others might be suffering due to these false victims’ actions.

    There’s more info on this and the history behind the floods posted at GRSB — that is, if your “constitution” is stronger than it was a couple weeks ago… ;-}

  2. I’m writing as someone who lives in a Bakrie-owned building, who’s water has been cut off over the floods. The water hasn’t been cut off at Bakrie’s luxury gym, I notice, where I’ll go in a minute to mandi. Of course I live in relatively luxury compared to the flood victims.

  4. Ganesha: I hope you mean what you say only metaphorically, and in reality have no wish to see physical harm come to Bakrie. Please affirm that this is so or I will have to delete your comment.

    Rules of this blog (as we get along because Unspun is relatively new to blogging) is you can disagree with someone, criticise them with passion but you should not wish physical harm onto them. God knows how many freaks and psychos out there who would take statements such as these as a serious instigation.
