No business like media business

Yosef Ardi has an interesting way of commemorating national Press Day on Feb 9: listing the businesses who have no real business owning the media, except perhaps it allows them to control the means of communications in the mainstream media…you know, those gateways to information before blogs came about and offered alternative information?

Here’s his list:

List of conglomerates or their families in media business: T=TV, M=Magazine, N=Newspaper, Tab=Tabloid, OL=Online, R=Radio
1) Salim: Indosiar (T), Prestige Indonesia (M)
2) Lippo: Suara Pembaruan (N), Investor Daily (N), Investor (M), Globe Asia (M)
3) Nursalim: Sinar Harapan (N), Indonesia Shangbao (N)
4) Sampoerna: Jurnal Nasional (N)
5) Jababeka: The President News (N, weekly)
6) Bimantara: RCTI (T), TPI (T), Global TV (T), Seputar Indonesia (N), Trust (M), Genie (Tab), Mom & Kiddie (Tab), Realita (Tab), Okezone.com (OL), Trijaya (R), Radio Dangdut (R), ARH (R), Women Radio (R)
7) Mahaka: Republika (N), Golf Digest (M), A+ (M), Radio One (R), Suara Indonesia (N), JakTV (T, with Tommy Winata),
8) Kalla-Bosowa: Tribun Timur (N), Fajar (N), Prambors Makassar (R),

One response to “No business like media business”

  1. Yosef Ardi’s in fine form. There’s one comfort here, though. Most of the media listed above are marginal, or semi-marginal players. Jusuf Kalla doesn’t exactly achieve Citizen Kane status with the likes of ‘Tribun Timur’ or ‘Prambors Makassar.’ Likewise, ‘Radio Dangdut’ isn’t going to forge a path back to power for the Bimantara Group (did Bambang Tri sell his stake ??)

And then even Suara Pembaruan’s a shadow of its former self. Aristedes Katoppo is a nice guy but all he ever seems to do these days is wonder around 5-star hotel lobbies with a sweet smile on his face, shaking hands with everyone. (Sorry, that’s mean I know).

It’s true, the TV stations are jewels in the crown. Indosiar (the Salims), TPI and RCTI (Bimantara) would come in very handy for the owners. That Tommy Winata has a share in the media is one of the biggest ironies (and travesties).

But I think this list – (as printed above) just underscores previous points about quality of journalists being the main hindrance to a quality mass media. One thing’s for sure: there’s plenty of competition in all media. It’s just us Bloggers who have a cozy little oligopoloy and that’ll change faster than you can say: “Kembali ke….LAPTOP!”.
