Update 7.30pm: There is confusion over the actual number of people who have been killed in the flight. What seems certain is that the number is over 20. Reuters puts the number at 23, BBC says 22, CNN quotes the government saying at least 21. This is substiantially less than the earlier figure of 44 being bandied about.

A personally sad development is that the crash may have claimed the life of Jakarta-based foreign correspondent. Reports from the field say that the medical authorities found his identification on a body and they are now trying to verify the identity before releasing any names. And editor from the paper in which he worked is flying down to Yogjakarta to help with the identification and other matters. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends.

Update 1.15pm: Metro TV reports that there are now 44 dead from the Garuda crash. Antara has a list of victims being treated in the hospitals. Antara reports that the spokesperson for the Australian Embassy Elizabeth O’Neil perished in the crash. It is understood that the Australian Embassy will be issuing a press release later today.

Update 8:40am: metro TV reports that 76 passengers were evacuated. But Transport Minister Hatta Rajasa says that the fate of another 57 passengers could not be accounted for.

A Grauda flight from Jakarta, GA 200, apparently crashed and burst into flames when trying to land at the Jogjakarta airport this morning. There were 133 passengers on board. It was apaprently a Boeing 737-400. Metro TV is showing clips and live feeds of the plane’s wreckage. t was the first flight from jakarta to Jogjakarta, leaving at 6am.

In one report it was reported tha there is a Muhammadiyah gatheringin Jogjakarta and many of the passengers, including a delegation originating in Australia, were delegates. It is not clar at this moment how many casualties there are.
