Verdict Comes Down Tomorrow – 23 Apr 2007

by Eric

Tomorrow, the District Court of Manado (Sulawesi, Indonesia), will hand down their decision on whether or not my Dad is guilty of polluting the environment. If my Dad is found guilty he will face a three year jail sentence and a $60,000 fine. My Dad is an innocent man. And I am his nervous son. Let me tell you why he’s innocent and why I’m nervous.

Assuming the verdict is handed down tomorrow it would be interesting to see how Newmont and WALHI reacts to it.

If Rick is found guilty, it would be interesting to see the reaction of the American Government as it juggles between the need to protect the rights of its citizen and the need to play the diplomatic card, the chambers of commerce and the investment community (who are usually too conservative to say anything to the media) and the environmentalists (crowing victory, one would expect).

Of particular interest will be WALHI’s reaction if the court acquits Rick Ness. Will the NGO come clan then and admit it stuffed up, say sorry and set about the long road to rehabilitate its reputation? or will it try to bury its head in the sand and pretend nothing happened?
