Malaysians go for change in Jakarta

In what has been billed in the usually staid Malaysia Club Jakarta (MCJ) as “the most exciting AGM in a decade,” the nearly 80 voting members of the MCJ got a thrill, first when there were two challengers for the post of the club’s President. The challengers were business consultant Ch’ng Chin Hon an hotelier Raymond Pereria. The incumbent was businessman A.T. Chuan, who has held on to the post for the past five years.

In the cliffhanger of a vote for president, Ch’ng and Chuan polled 38 votes each, with Pereria polling only 2 votes. Amid some confusion, the group decided to have a runoff vote with Pereria being asked in for the second round of voting. The final tally was also a cliffhanger. Ch’ng got 39 votes while Chuan got 38.

That was enough to herald in a new president though and in his acceptance speech Ch’ng promised change, more transparency and communication to the club’s members and a greater focus on putting Malaysia and Malaysians on the business front in Indonesia.

    Food for thought

Indeed, it was a total contrast to what was otherwise a “You vote me and I vote you” election for last year which as a matter of fact gather just enough members to meet the quorum. Democarcy at it’s best despite having a very biased MC/Moderator who happen to be the Vice President 1 of the previous EXCO.

  2. I understand that Unspun has also landed himself a position in the new exco. Strange that he left this out in his report….

  3. Opah: You are right but Unspun is modest lah. Just the Asst. Secretary’s position, too insignificant to report on.
