Malaysians told to bring racial arguments elsewhere

One of the great things in Indonesia is the freedom with which they are able to talk about religion without other Indonesians getting their panties in a twist. Hera Diani’s “Yap yap yap yap yap…” , which was featured in the Maverick blog this week, is one such example. Hera is a journalist with The Jakarta Post.

She writes about her being an “agnostic” making her a sort of Muslim. She received some encouraging and thoughtful comments from Indonesians but prefaced her posting with this message:

(First of all, for the Malaysian bloggers who have been invading this blog with the Chinese vs Malay debate, please move your debate somewhere else. Thanks.)

Perhaps Malaysians brothers and sisters should learn to chill from the Indonesians. And leave your racial baggage behind.

  1. Yes, Malaysians do carry alot of racial baggage but ironically it is in Indonesia, not Malaysia, where the worst and most recent anti-Chinese violence has occurred. Indonesians could do well to “chill” too.

  2. Yes, Malaysians can’t seem to let go of their racial baggage. This makes them very egocentric. It is always race before anything else. How Vision 2020 is to be achieved is anyone’s guess.

I agree Indonesians are way ahead here. Malaysians have a lot to learn, beginning with humility.

  3. As a person that hasn’t been to KL, I was there during the UMNO meeting in mid November. I was surprised that Malaysians are behind on the political matters from Indonesia. It feels that Malaysians are, like Indonesia 20-30 years ago and UMNO is like Golkar in a different form. Reading the newspaper at that time, and the sword being shown in the Youth Organization of UMNO, it’s pretty scary.
