Daddy, that man was nasty to me

It is a serious matter if the President of another country accuses a journalist of assisting rebels to assassinate him.

But serious as it is, isn’t it a bit precious for a journalist to ask President SBY for protection? The police and the courts should be the proper institutions to handle such allegations, if they had indeed been made.

Getting the Press Council and assorted journalistic andpro-free press associations is also fair game. But to go running to the President just because Horta made an allegation? Precious. Precious.

Desi Anwar requests protection from Yudhoyono after Horta remark

Antara ,  Jakarta   |  Fri, 04/25/2008 5:33 PM  |  Headlines

Indonesian journalist Desi Anwar on Friday requested protection from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono after Timor Leste President Ramos Horta accused her of assisting his country’s rebels to assassinate him.

“I also beg President Yudhoyono to ask for clarification from President Horta about his baseless allegation. I also hope my good name and that of my TV station, Metro TV, will be restored,”

she said after filing a complaint against Horta in the Press Council.

Desi has repeatedly denied Horta’s allegation.

“The allegation is a lie, irresponsible. It hurts me a lot,” she said, as she was escorted by Metro TV high-ranking officials Djafar Assegaf, Elman Saragih and Saur Hutabarat. (***)
